Peshawar School Roof Collapse Kills 17 Children and a Teacher, Hospital Says

At least 17 students and one teacher died when a school roof collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, according to a hospital spokesperson cited by The Independent. The students were all under the age of 13, the spokesperson said on Thursday.

The victims were brought dead to Lady Reading Hospital, hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim said. More than a dozen other people injured in the collapse were also taken to the same facility, he added.

Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for the emergency services, said several children were still trapped beneath the rubble in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Why it matters

The deaths add to a pattern of structural failures in Pakistan that have repeatedly struck places where children gather to learn. The Independent reported that in July, a roof gave way at a tutoring centre under construction in Lahore, killing four schoolchildren.

The Independent noted that building collapses are common in Pakistan, where construction standards are often poorly enforced. Many structures are put up with substandard materials, and safety rules are frequently set aside to cut costs, the outlet reported.

The collapse in Peshawar also raises questions about oversight of school buildings, particularly in older or overcrowded structures. When a roof fails during ordinary school hours, the consequences fall hardest on the youngest occupants, who have the least ability to escape on their own.

What is known so far

The confirmed toll comes from Lady Reading Hospital, where the dead and injured were taken. Mohammad Asim, the hospital's spokesperson, said the students who died were below 13 years old, along with one teacher.

The Independent reported that the students and the teacher arrived at the hospital already dead, together with more than a dozen injured people.

Emergency services spokesperson Bilal Faizi said several children remained trapped under the debris. That account, reported by The Independent, indicates the casualty figures could still change as rescue work continues.

Other outlets carried differing figures earlier in the day. The Express Tribune reported at least seven dead, including six children. Tribal News Network reported four dead and 20 injured. Reuters reported 17 students and one teacher killed. The Alabama News Wire, citing an official, reported at least 10 children dead and more than two dozen injured. Early casualty counts in the aftermath of a collapse often shift as victims are identified and rescue teams reach more of the site.

A recurring danger

The Lahore tutoring centre collapse in July is the most recent comparison point offered in the reporting. In that case, four schoolchildren died when a roof came down at a facility still under construction.

The Independent's account describes the broader problem as one of enforcement rather than isolated bad luck. Weak application of construction standards, cheap or unsuitable building materials, and cost-cutting that bypasses safety requirements are all cited as factors behind the frequency of such collapses in the country.

Schools are especially exposed to the consequences. A classroom holds a large number of people in a single enclosed space, and a roof failure leaves those inside with little warning and few routes out. In Peshawar, the victims were children under 13, an age group that depends on adults for direction in an emergency.

What to watch

Rescue operations were still under way, with children believed trapped in the wreckage. The final death toll, the condition of the injured, and any official inquiry into why the roof gave way are the details to watch in the coming days.
